The Pickle Factory Community Mural Workshop

A participatory workshop series with teenagers exploring identity, imagination and storytelling through character design. Participants developed their own spirit-animal-inspired creatures using drawing, colour and collaborative making before contributing to a shared mural. The project encouraged creativity, confidence and self-expression while demonstrating how illustration can build connection, celebrate individual voices and create a collective artwork rooted in community participation.

This project was funded by NYCE and The Bristol Community Festival grants.

Process: we find attributes important for us and we match them with animals that inspire that attribute. Then we start drawing!

From there I created a mural sketch combining the characters created by the teams and I show them mural techniques, emulsions, spray paint with stencils and posca pens.

The project finished in a family event with djs and creative activities, everyone brought their friends and family to see the mural we made together and talk about what the animals represented!
